The wave-like pattern on the back of this blade (ura) is known as montanren (紋鍛錬). It is created during forging and tempering, and if done correctly, one may see a beautiful wave pattern appear where the harder and softer steel meets. It is the sign of a highly skilled blacksmith and is usually only found in high-end single bevel knives from Sakai's Master Craftsmen.
